The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a relatively young league, dating back to 1996. The league was established by the National Basketball Association (NBA) to provide a professional platform for women's basketball players in the USA. Since then, the WNBA has become a respected institution in the sporting world, contributing to the growth and recognition of women's basketball worldwide.

The WNBA's first season kicked off in June 1997, with eight teams spread across the country. The New York Liberty team and the Houston Comets had the honor of playing the first game in the league's history. The Comets won the first-ever WNBA championship that year, relying on talented players such as Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson. Since then, the WNBA has grown significantly, adding new teams and steadily increasing its popularity.

The WNBA has become a major force in the world of women's basketball, attracting some of the sport's best talent. Over the years, many legendary players have emerged and left their mark on the league. Among the most famous players are Lisa Leslie, considered one of the best players of all time, as well as Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Maya Moore and Tamika Catchings. These players not only dominated the WNBA scene, but also represented the USA in international competitions, contributing to the success of the national team. Today, the WNBA has 12 teams, which play a total of 40 games per team during the regular season. The first round of the play-offs is played to the best of 3, while the semi-finals and WNBA Finals are played over 5 games.

Among the league's top players are Elena Delle Donne of the Washington Mystics, Skylar Diggins of the Phoenix Mercury, Satou Sabally of the Dallas Wings, Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, both of the New York Liberty, and A'ja Wilson and Candace Parker of the Las Vegas Aces.
