Every year since 2017, the 30 NBA franchises have presented their new jerseys City Edition. These are generally worn by NBA players during an NBA season only. Complementary to the Icon, Association and Statement jerseys, the City Edition sets focus on a detail of the city's or its franchise's history, and celebrate its cultural or historical heritage, while paying tribute to the fans and community of a city, or even an entire state.

Because they allow designers to break away from the basic colors of the franchise if they wish, some City Edition jerseys have quickly become very popular with fans, as in the case of the various Vice City jerseys of the Miami Heat, the return of the Fiesta jersey of the San Antonio Spurs in 2022, or the series of Brooklyn Nets jerseys inspired by the genius of avant-garde New York painter Jean-Michel Basquiat.
